When I hear the word September, I think about Hurricanes, hollow barrels, warm water, and New York. Yep New York! I have so many great memories of epic surf on Long Island, New York that I’m not sure if anything could ever replace them. This September is the first ever
ASP World Championship to be held on the East Coast of the U.S.,
The Quiksilver Pro New York. The contest will be kicking off in Long Beach and pros from around the world will be competing for the biggest prize purse in surfing history- $1 million dollars!
Long Island in September is one of the best places to be on the Western Atlantic. I can remember the much talked about 1995 Hurricane Season in New York. One particular day stands out the most. I was sitting on Charlie Bunger’s roof in West Gilgo with Tommy Bunger after an amazing morning session and watching set after set peeling along the coast. An image I will never forget of September perfection. That summer was blessed with storm after storm sending East Coasters waves for almost two months straight. It was the best summer of waves ever in my lifetime thus far.
With all the East Coast hype, I felt like the next “In The Shack” should focus on New York Board Shaper, Tom Bunger. Tommy is a busy guy between raising his kids and running the Bunger Surf Board Factory. His family owns one of the oldest surf shops in the North East, Bunger Surf Shop. They have been shaping boards for 50 years, delivering style and culture to Long Island’s surf community. Charlie Bunger, Tom’s dad has been shaping surfboards since 1962 and during the 1990’s, Tom Bunger finally picked up the Skill Saw and started shaping under the Bunger Brand.
I first met Tom back in 1992 in college and since then I‘ve been riding his boards with pride. I can say this about Tom... his craftsmanship is unique, he knows what you need when you need it and he enjoys making people happy.
This September, the first ASP Surf Contest will take place in Long Beach, just minutes from the
Bunger Surf Shop in Babylon. If you’re coming out to watch the contest in
Long Beach, jump on the train East to Babylon Village and visit the Bunger Surf Shop and Long Island Surfing Museum. The shop is packed with all your needs and it’s a super friendly environment. The train or
LIRR pulls right into town and the shop is minutes from the station. Check it out!
This “In the Shack” interview was not easy. Tom is a busy bee shaping boards and working hard…..special thanks to Tom’s awesome wife, Agnès for all her help with this interview. It just shows behind every great man stands a great woman!
